In 2005, the [http://lawlibrary.wm.edu Wolf Law Library] at the [http://www.wm.edu College of William & Mary] in Williamsburg, Virginia started a [[George Wythe Collection|special collection]] recreating the [[Wythe's Library|library]] of [[George Wythe]]. Development of the collection led library director Jim Heller to create space in the library to display the books to the public. The George Wythe Encyclopedia project began on February 15, 2013. Originally conceived as supplement to the book display, the project expanded from a bibliographic focus to include all aspects of Wythe's life and careers. The Encyclopedia is intended to provide a single source of information relating to George Wythe and facilitate future scholarship.

Many William & Mary library staff members have contributed to Wythepedia including Jill Carter, Fred Dingledy, Paul Hellyer, Lauren Seney, Michael Umberger. Andrew Howard (Class of 2014)  identified Wythe's [[Letters and Papers]] and created the majority of the pages for them, transcribing many of the documents. William & Mary law students also worked on the project, particularly the assistants of Linda Tesar: Sarah Deuitch, John Sanders, Abby Snider, Stephanie Wilmes, and Christopher Yakubisin (Class of 2016).
