<blockquote>This is a very good copy of the scarce first edition of this translation. Thucydides (c. 460 B.C. - c. 395 B.C.) was an Athenian general who served in the Peloponnesian War fought between the Peloponnesian League (led by Sparta) and the Delian League (led by Athens). His account of the conflict to 411 B.C. is widely considered a classic and regarded as one of the earliest scholarly works of history. <ref> Lowndes Volume IV, page 2680. </ref></blockquote>
<blockquote> Livy is our main source for early imperial Roman military history which he uncritically based on existing annals. The greater part of his work consists of descriptions of battles and wars in which the Roman contribution is exaggerated or distorted for the greater glory of the empire. As he himself had no military experience, his writings are mostly of literary interest, and have scant value for assessing ancient warfare. <ref> Pieters 244; Rahir 1680; Willems 1548 </ref> </blockquote>
__NOTOC__
<blockquote> Stith's History of the First Discovery and Settlement of Virginia was published in Williamsburg in 1747 and followed by a London edition of 1753. In it he traced the first seventeen years of the history of England's first permanent colony in North America, from its founding in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London to the dissolution of the company in 1624. Long regarded by later historians as a pioneering example of scholarship based on extensive research in original sources Stith's work was in other respects more subjective, praising what he regarded as the more liberal policies of a reform-minded group of Virginia Company officials and roundly condemning what he perceived as the authoritarian intentions of the initial leaders and James I. <ref> Thad W. <blockquote>In this work, Mazzei outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the revolution, and the economy and government of the United States. Also discussed are Indians, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinatti. ===by John Blair===
__NOTOC__
<blockquote>''The Chronology and History of the World'' was published in London in early summer 1754. The book quickly became the standard work of its kind and was frequently reprinted throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. To the 1768 edition Blair added a set of fourteen maps and ‘A dissertation on the rise and progress of geography’, which were also published separately in the same year, and in 1784 an expanded version of his dissertation was published in a smaller duodecimo format. A French translation of ''The Chronology and History of the World'' appeared in Paris in 1797, and there were several American editions in the 1820s. From 1856 onwards it was known as Blair's Chronological Tables, Revised and Enlarged, although the editor of the 1856 London edition, J. Willoughby Rosse, declared in the preface that ‘all that remains of Blair is the general outline’ (xii); a London edition was published with that title as late as 1904.

The success of Blair's book led to the author's election as a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1755; in the same year he published a paper, ‘Agitation of the waters near Reading’, in the society's Transactions. In 1761 he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. In September 1757, through the influence at Leicester House of John Home and Gilbert Elliot, among others, Blair was appointed chaplain to Augusta, princess-dowager of Wales (to whom he later dedicated some editions of his Chronology and History), and mathematics tutor to her son Prince Edward, later duke of York, whom he accompanied on a continental tour in 1763–4. He subsequently served as Edward's secretary, and owed to him his appointment as prebendary of Westminster in March 1761, which was later followed by presentation of the dean and chapter of Westminster to the vicarage of Hinckley, to the vicarage of St Bride's, London, in 1771, and to the rectory of St John the Evangelist, Westminster, in 1776. He was also rector of Horton in Buckinghamshire.<ref> Richard B. __NOTOC__
<blockquote>In many respects Rights of Man is a disordered mix of narrative, principled argument, and rhetorical appeal—betraying the composite materials Paine used and the speed with which it was composed. But the vigorous and trenchant style in which it was written accounts for its huge success. It was quickly reprinted and widely circulated, with copies being read aloud in inns and coffee houses, so that by May some 50,000 copies were said to be in circulation. Of the 300 or more pamphlets which the revolution controversy spawned, Rights of Man was the first seriously to damage Burke's case and to restore credit to the French both in Britain and America. <ref> Mark Philp, ‘Paine, Thomas (1737–1809)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, May 2008 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/21133, accessed 27 June 2013] </ref> </blockquote>
===by Sir Robert Filmer===
__NOTOC__
<blockquote>...all of Filmer's political writings built on the foundation laid by Patriarcha. That book was a clearly organized and succinct work. It did three main things. First, it refuted all accounts of human society that suggested that the people were originally free, and that political authority originated in the consent of these free people. Filmer, displaying considerable acumen and powers of logic, was able to pick some sizeable holes in consent theory, and it is in this area that the book still has some force. Secondly, as an alternative account of the matter, Filmer identified political authority with the patriarchal authority of Adam. No human beings were ever born into freedom, because from creation onwards royal-patriarchal authority was in the hands of successors to the patriarchal authority of Adam, and then again of Noah. All modern kings were ‘either fathers of their people, or heirs of such fathers or usurpers of the right of such fathers’ (Sommerville, 2). Kings might be elected by their people, but the power that they executed was divinely instituted at the creation. Thirdly, Filmer used these arguments as a basis for a reading of the English constitution and its development. The natural patriarchal authority of kings was not limited by positive law. The king of England was ‘the author, interpreter and corrector of the common laws’ (Sommerville, 34). The liberties of parliament existed only by the monarch's grace, and, in point of fact, the Commons were not an original part of parliament. Many of Filmer's contemporaries believed that the tripartite character of the modern parliament had existed from before the Norman conquest, but he argued that the Commons had been summoned only from the time of Henry I. This proved, so Filmer argued, that the people had no natural or original right to parliamentary representation. <ref> Glenn Burgess, ‘Filmer, Sir Robert (1588?–1653)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Oct 2009 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/9424, accessed 11 June 2013] </ref> </blockquote>
===by James Harrington===
__NOTOC__
<blockquote> Oceana, on which Harrington's contemporary and much more his posthumous reputation rested, earned him not only disciples but also critics, although not as many of the latter as he seems to have wished. Hobbes, whom he had attacked in Oceana (albeit highly respectfully) for having failed, among other faults, to distinguish between authority and power, never replied. Harrington thought of his critics as principally clerics and Oxford men, although the most able of them, Matthew Wren, was neither. Harrington answered him in The Prerogative of Popular Government (1657), and again in Politicaster, a much slighter work of 1659. During the confused period following Oliver Cromwell's death on 3 September 1658, Harringtonian opinions about the political order conducive to a permanent settlement for England were frequently voiced in Richard Cromwell's parliament in 1659, but to no avail: Harrington's main concern at this time was to prevent the restoration of anything like a hereditary House of Lords or a nominated replacement, but the parliament voted for the restoration of the Lords. The ‘republicans’ in this parliament included a few supporters of ‘classical republican’ ideas like Harrington's (eight or ten according to Brief Lives, ed. Dick, 284) out of perhaps fifty opponents of the continuation of military oligarchy, or monarchy, or a restored House of Lords, but they could not agree. <ref> H. M. ===by Henry St. John Bolingbroke===
__NOTOC__
<blockquote> Concerned with the interests of the landed gentry and conscious of the way Walpole abused his power, Bolingbroke devoted his pen to forging a political platform capable of uniting a majority of the political nation. He contributed nearly one hundred essays to The Craftsman. Many of these were individual polemical forays against the ministry that can be properly understood only by appreciating the specific context in which they were written and the debate with ministerial writers in which he was engaged. Some of his essays were part of a more coherent argument that delved below the surface of events and offered a sophisticated analysis of the political situation that resonated long after the death of the main protagonists. In 1730–31 Bolingbroke contributed twenty-two essays to The Craftsman using the persona of Humphrey Oldcastle. Together these formed his Remarks on the History of England. In 1733–4 he contributed a further series of essays which later formed A Dissertation upon Parties. In both of these series he laboured to destroy the old distinctions between whigs and tories and tried to forge a new country party able to defend the constitution and safeguard the liberties of the subject. <ref> H. __NOTOC__
<blockquote> Aaron Arrowsmith was a prominent English cartographer, engraver, and publisher, who created about two hundred maps during his illustrious career. He became hydrographer to the Prince of Wales around 1810, and to the King in 1820. Samuel LEwis, noted American draftsman, penman, cartographer, and geographer, published both independently and jointly with Arrowsmith. Samuel Lewis "is to be especially remembered as the draftsman who put in form for publication the celebrated map (originally drawn by William Clark) that in 1814 gave to the world its first detailed reflection of the American Northwest, as Lewis and Clark had pictured it." <ref> Wheat, vol.
{{DISPLAYTITLE:''An Inquiry Into The Principles Of Political Oeconomy''}}
===by Sir James Steuart===
__NOTOC__
<blockquote> Steuart was a supporter of mercantilism, the theory that the prosperity of a nation is dependent upon its supply of capital, and that the global volume of trade is static. Steuart and followers of mercantilism believe that government should assume a protectionist role in the economy, by encouraging exports and discouraging imports, especially through the use of tariffs. <ref> Blaug ''Great Economists before Keynes'' pp.241-242; Einaudi 1527; Goldsmiths' 10276; Kress 6498; Palgrave III, pp.475-476; Schumpeter ''History of Economic Analysis'' p.176 </ref> </blockquote>

<blockquote> In the Principles, Steuart made notable contributions to economic theory: the historical analysis of the origins of the exchange economy, where he (like Adam Smith) was influenced by David Hume; to the theory of economic development with its emphasis on the importance of interdependent sectors; to the theory of competitive price, and, most notably, to the treatment of money and banking, where he showed his appreciation of banks as a means of mobilizing resources in countries undergoing the process of institutional, as well as economic, change. But it should be recalled that the first two books of the Principles had been completed in Germany by the summer of 1759; that is, prior to the dissemination of the physiocratic macro-economic model of a system using capital, later supplemented by a clear distinction between factors of production and categories of return. But despite detailed changes to the 1767 edition, most of which were incorporated in his collected Works (1805), and now in the 1998 edition, Steuart did not fundamentally change his approach, perhaps because he believed that the model of ‘primitive accumulation’ continued to be relevant to the circumstances which he had encountered in Europe. <ref> Andrew S. Skinner, ‘Steuart , Sir James, of Coltness and Westshield, third baronet (1713–1780)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, May 2006 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/7478, accessed 11 June 2013] </ref> </blockquote>
